Proper Citations and Credit

The Mariners’ Museum requires proper credit, and reproduction permission is contingent upon agreement to supply appropriate credit lines. Of special concern for the museum is facilitating the identification or retrieval of the items that are reproduced, since publication/broadcast may create further demand for reproduction. “The Mariners’ Museum” must always be credited. In addition, the credit line should include the objects title and Archival Number or ID when feasible. Finally, in cases where objects are reproduced online, the museum requests a linkback.

Please use the following credit format:

Object Title (where objects are displayed online linkback the title to the Catalog Search or its objects page)

Copyright, Rights, and Restrictions

The Mariners’ Museum collections and archives are obtained from many sources and are intended primarily for research and educational purposes. Certain works may be protected by copyright, trademark, or related interests not governed by The Mariners’ Museum. Permission for use will be granted only to the extent of The Mariners’ Museum ownership of the rights relating to your particular interest. The museum, to the best of its ability, will indicate if any additional rights exist. If they do, obtaining additional necessary permissions, remain with the individual.

Allowable Uses

The Mariners’ Museum permits the non-exclusive use of digital and print reproductions of its collection and archival materials according to applicable rights and restrictions.

We permit and encourage personal, and educational use of our documents, images, audio, and video. High quality or high-resolution versions are available on request, for these purposes. Fees may apply for duplication, delivery, and digitization when the item hasn’t been previously digitized. Note that visitors can use images already available in our online catalog for personal and educational use without special permission from the museum. If you’d wish, the museum would like to hear how our items have helped in your research and projects, so please contact us to let us know. Doing so helps us secure grants and funding to make more of our objects accessible.

Use of The Mariners’ Museum reproductions, images, audio, and video materials for publication, commercial use, or distribution requires written permission and usage rights from the Digital Services Department. Usage fees apply in addition to any digitization, duplication, and delivery fees. Reduced fees for non-profit and scholarly projects may be granted at The Mariners’ Museum discretion.
